Reading a seller profile before you order

The market is the smaller decision

Most of the risk in an order does not come from the marketplace, it comes from the specific person on the other side of it. Escrow, address verification and settlement choice all reduce structural risk and none of them make a careless seller ship correctly. Yet buyers spend hours choosing a market and seconds choosing a vendor.

Read in this order

1. Completed order count and how long it took

A thousand orders over two years is a working operation. A thousand orders in three weeks is either a very unusual seller or a number that means something other than it appears to. Rate matters as much as total.

2. Recency of the good feedback

A profile can coast on reputation earned a year ago while current performance has collapsed. Sort by recent and read what the last few weeks look like, because that is the period your order will belong to.

3. How negative feedback was answered

This is the highest information part of any profile and it is the part buyers skip. A seller who answered a problem with dates and a remedy behaves differently under stress than one who argued or ignored it. Ten defensive replies say more than five hundred five star ratings.

4. Whether terms are stated at all

Listings that state dispatch windows, what happens if a package does not arrive and under what conditions a reship is offered belong to sellers who have thought about failure. Listings that state only how good the product is belong to sellers who have not.

Signals worth stepping back from

• A request to release payment before delivery, which removes your dispute route
• Pressure to move the conversation off the market messaging system
• A brand new profile offering unusually large orders immediately
• Feedback that is uniformly perfect and uniformly brief, which reads as manufactured

The cheapest protection available

Start small with anybody untested. A small first order costs a fraction of a large one and buys the same information about whether this seller does what they said. Buyers who lose money to a vendor almost never lost it on their fifth order with them, they lost it on their first.
